This is where my political anxieties about the next century come from:
I am disturbed by the wild exploitation of the limited natural resources of the planet and our attack on air, water and land. I'm worried we'll be six billion men and women in 2001: the biggest demographic leap in history. I am concerned that prejudice and exploitation, disguised as social class, continue to be denied to women δηλαδή that is, to more than half of the world's population αντι basic labor rights, representation, and self-determination. I am concerned that market freedom is being imposed while labor freedom is being abolished. It worries me that the world economy is boosting the free movement of goods while banning the free movement of workers. I am concerned about the return of the worst points of fascism: xenophobia, racial discrimination, political and religious fundamentalism, the persecution of the migrant worker. I am concerned that the drug empire is creating its own power, above national and international law. I am concerned about the deterioration of urban culture worldwide from Boston and Birmingham to Bogota, Brazzaville, Bangkok: homeless, begging, abandonment of old age, uncontrolled pandemics, insecurity, crime, deterioration of health and education services... I am concerned about the re-emergence of the irrational arms race between poor neighbors for the benefit of their rich neighbors. It worries me that for the first time in history man has the terrifying ability to drag his whole nature into suicide, which-before the nuclear era - managed to survive our tragic madness. I am worried about a world without witnesses. I am worried about anything conspiring against the continuation of human life. All of this is part of politics, of life within a community, of the state <<city>>.
